CrossFit Kids Methodology

For adults, CrossFit means many things. At the core, we have the prescription of constantly varied, functional movemements done at high intensity.

If we had a few more words then we might look to Greg Glassman’s definition in 100 words.

CrossFit in 100 words

That’s a dense, but succinct summary. For kids, the 1000-foot view remains the same, but we can simplify the above with “Moving in fun ways, a lot”

Fitness as Fun!

We are not a bootcamp and we do not punish kids with exercise (So no “drop and give me 20 burpees” here). We celebrate movement and the joy that comes from exercise. As coaches, we have done our jobs if our classes are (mostly) indistinguishable from kids play.

We want the kids to leave each class wanting more.

Our focus will be on jumping, rolling, squatting, climbing, and playing. No barbells, and not much “stuff in their hands”…. mostly just familiarizing themselves with their own body, how it moves and improving coordination and balance.

Program Specifics

Our CrossFit Kids class is geared for children ages 5 - 12, other CrossFit gyms offer a wider range of classes, and if we are not a fit then reach out and we can recommend other programs.

Note that it is not the age of your child that is the deciding factor for inclusion in our CrossFit Kids class. It is largely based upon individual skill, athleticism, and maturity and will ultimately be decided by the head coach. This is to ensure your child is getting the most out of the program.

Class Structure

Our CrossFit Kids class last 40 minutes, but with a 10 minute buffer before and after. This makes it convenient for parents (as the class effectively lasts an hour) and gives some time for questions and answers before we get started and after we finish.

Let's suppose the class is from 6pm to 7pm.

Before Class Wait with your child in the lobby area
6pm Coach will invite students into the gym
6:10pm Class Starts, parents that choose to stay remain in the seating area
6:50pm Class Ends, kids are welcome to leave
7pm All kids should be with their parents by now

Sample Class

Warm Up - Fish Food

Using bean bags as fish food, have the children do various kinds of walks to collect the food and bring it back to the bucket.

Skill - Sharks With Laser Beams

We will be learning about the thruster.

Hold up an abmat and have the kids shoot their laser beams at the shark food. Talk out loud about the position of the food.

  • The shark food is straight ahead,
  • The shark food is down low low low,
  • The shark food is on the ceiling, shoot the ceiling.

WOD - Tug Boat

A 5 minute AMRAP (as many reps as possible) of “pulling” from a seated position, and of hollow-body rocking (boats) and superman extensions (fishies), intermixed with lightning, thunder, waves and calm waters.

GAME

Always a surprise.
